My Approach

I believe the core of all successful therapy is a trusting relationship and a strong commitment to work together.  These will help create the safe place you need to fully engage in therapy. It begins with our first contact and grows over time as we explore your current stresses and needs. Therapy can help you deal with difficult situations you may be facing, understand and accept yourself in a new way and find solutions that can enhance your life.

I would describe my style as holistic and interactive. My original training was in psychodynamic psychotherapy which focuses on the whole person; how you are feeling now, your current roles and relationships, your family background and formative experiences. This remains the foundation of my approach to treatment because it provides us with a road map to explore your current feelings and experiences, as well as your background, and identify underlying issues that need work. I want therapy to be an empowering process for you.

Additional therapy approaches are very important in working through specific problems and promoting healing and change.  Some of these modalities are the product of psychotherapy research and advances in neuroscience, often described as evidence based. They focus on your attachment and relational style, traumatic experiences which often cause chronic anxiety and depression, and problematic patterns of thinking that cause negative emotions and become barriers to changing your behavior. It is also crucial for us to identify your strengths and what coping strategies have worked for you, so that you can draw on those resources.
